Recreation Update: November 23 Print Article Font Size
We’re doing everything we can to make sure the residents of Golden stay safe and healthy. That means taking extra precautions to limit the spread of COVID-19.
Last week, the Public Health Officer announced new province-wide restrictions for British Columbia. Here’s what you need to know about the impacts to Town of Golden facilities and recreation operations:

  • Since reopening the Mount 7 Rec Plex and the Arena earlier this fall, we have required patrons to wear a mask in our recreation facilities. Wearing a mask is now mandatory in all Town of Golden facilities.
  • Masks are now required on the ice during public skating and parent and tot skating and continue to be required for Winter Walking.
Drop-in Programs **Updated November 24**
  • Parent and Tot outdoor programming for this Wednesday, Nov. 25 is cancelled, as staff seeks clarity on whether or not we can move forward with this program under the new order.
  • UPDATE: For the remainder of this week (November 23 - 29), the Town of Golden will be postponing all fitness programs, yoga and the winter walking program. This is in alignment with new recommendations from the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) to pause these classes until further clarity is provided by the Provincial Health Office.
During this time, staff will be reviewing our existing safety plans to ensure we are ready to make any adjustments if needed.
Individuals who have already registered for programs will be contacted directly to let them know their class has been cancelled. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we navigate guidelines and restrictions that continue to change.
  • Recreation programs will still continue at the Rec Plex and Arena. Some drop-in programs may be adjusted slightly to adhere to the new orders. Our new Recreation schedule for December will be coming out later this week.
  • Drop-in pickleball has shifted to a cohort model led by a new user group. If you are interested in joining this cohort, please reach out at and staff will connect you with group organizers.
  • All other regular scheduled drop-in programming, including fitness and yoga will continue as they are not considered high-intensity programs.
  • We will continue to collect contact tracing information through our online registration platform for all drop-in programs.
Cohorts and User Groups
  • Staff is working with user groups to ensure that COVID-19 Safety Plans are updated and comply with the new orders.
  • Since reopening, we have not allowed spectators at any sport, this is echoed under the new orders.
  • Parents who have been allowed in the building to support their children are considered sport group volunteers. As part of the new order we will be working with key user groups to limit the number of volunteers in the building during each rental.
  • We continue to support a number of community cohort sport groups at both the Rec Plex and Arena. These sports are able to continue under the viaSport Return to Sport Phase 3 guidelines, with the exception of no spectators and no travel.
The Town has been informed that a resident, and a member of one of the cohort hockey groups, has tested positive for COVID-19. Due to the viaSport cohort model, and the effectiveness of both the Town’s COVID-19 Safety Plans and Protocols and the cohort groups COVID-19 Safety Plan, individuals that were in close contact with the resident were informed immediately and the Town cancelled the groups programming for a minimum of two weeks.
We appreciate the patience and understanding of the community as we adjust operations at our recreation facilities in order to provide recreation opportunities safely.
As COVID-19 cases increase in our region, it’s important that we all continue to do our part to keep our community safe and healthy. This means following the recommendations and orders of health officials, staying home as much as possible, avoiding non-essential travel, wearing a mask, washing our hands, staying home when sick, and practicing physical distancing.
